As two angels observe the lives of various citizens of Berlin, one of them, Damiel (Bruno Ganz), begins to fall in love with a beautiful circus performer (Solveig Dommartin) and ponders giving up his immortality. Meanwhile, Damiel's fellow angel, Cassiel (Otto Sander), follows a suicidal young man, and Peter Falk makes an intriguing appearance as himself, a renowned actor with a surprising secret that ties into Damiel and Cassiel's existential dilemmas.
