In this fascinating and unconventional examination of the creative
process, an artist near the end of his career finds new inspiration in a
young model. Edouard Frenhofer (Michel Piccoli) is a famous and
well-respected artist who lives in a comfortable estate in the French
countryside. At the age of 60, Frenhofer considers his career as a
painter to be over; he says he no longer feels any inspiration to
create, and his last attempt at a major work, a nude study of his wife
Liz (Jane Birkin) called "La
Belle Noiseuse" (The Beautiful Nuisance), has sat unfinished for ten
years. Just as Frenhofer has lost his enthusiasm for his art, he has
also lost his passion for Liz; their relationship is polite and
friendly, but without enthusiasm. When Frenhofer tells Nicolas (David
Bursztein), his young protégé, that he no longer feels the desire to
paint, Nicolas suggests that he needs a more inspiring subject, and he
offers his girlfriend Marianne (Emmanuelle Béart) as a model. Frenhofer
is taken with Marianne's beauty, and, with Liz's cool approval, he and
Marianne spend several arduous sessions together, exchanging ideas and
opinions as Frenhofer methodically attempts to create a final
masterpiece. While La Belle Noiseuse runs 240 minutes, director Jacques
Rivette also prepared an alternate version, La Belle Noiseuse -
Divertimento, which runs 120 minutes, features a different framing
sequence, and incorporates takes unused in the original cut.

Toward the end of his reign, Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Alec

Commodus (Christopher Plummer), the de facto heir, poisons Aurelius.
Commodus becomes an ineffectual
leader, corrupt and pompous -- and although Livius concedes to

Distrusting his corrupt son Commodus (Christopher Plummer), diplomatic
Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Alec Guiness) tells his daughter Lucilla
(Sophia Loren) of his intentions to make his adopted, tribune son Livius
(Stephen Boyd) heir instead. Cleander, a blind man (played by Mel
Ferrer) loyal to Commodus overhears and quickly poisons Aurelius before
he can implement his plans. When Lucilla tells Livius of her father's
wishes, he stands aside rather than challenge Commodus. While the
Barbarians are pounding at
the fringes of the empire, despot Commodus wages primarily a war of ego,
flaunting his power with cruelty, claiming himself a god. When he finds
out that he is not, after all, the son of Aurelius, he immediately
orders his real father's death and turns his attention to Lucilla, who
has more right to the throne than he. Soon Lucilla herself finds that
she is not exempt from Commodus' power. Livius must step in if he is to
save her. Both producer Samuel Bronston and director Anthony Mann teamed
up again after the successful El Cid on this feature, but could not
pull off a commercial success, though critics since have given it a
relative amount of praise, especially for the action sequences. Despite
the starring celebrities and appearances by other well-knowns such as
Omar Sherif, James Mason and the ubiquitous Eric Porter, The Fall of the
Roman Empire did not have a strong enough box-office appeal, as was
reflected in its $18 million loss.

Nietzsche puts an end to the brutal scene, throwing his arms around the
horse's neck, sobbing. After this, he lies motionless and silent for two
days on a divan, until he loses consciousness and his mind. Somewhere
in the countryside, the
driver of the cab lives with his daughter and the horse. Outside, a
windstorm rages. Immaculately photographed in Bela Tarr's renowned long
takes, The Turin Horse is the final statement from a master filmmaker.
