At the Café des Poètes in Paris, a fight breaks out between the poet Orphée (Jean Marais) and a group of resentful upstarts. A rival poet, Cègeste (Edouard Dermit), is killed, and a mysterious princess (María Casares) insists on taking Orpheus and the body away in her Rolls-Royce. Orphée soon finds himself in the underworld, where the Princess announces that she is, in fact, Death. Orpheus escapes in the car back to the land of the living, only to become obsessed with the car radio.

One of the first "underground" films of the 1960's to achieve a degree of mainstream acceptance (it was an actual hit in New York City, was well-received in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and was banned in Chicago and Boston), Andy Warhol's The Chelsea Girls offered a long, unblinking look into the lives of Warhol's retinue of "superstars" as they showed off for the camera in their various rooms in the notorious Chelsea Hotel, long a favored New York hangout for writers, artists and bohemians. Along with such notables of the moment as Eric Emerson, Brigid Polk, Ondine, and Mario Montez, one of the "girls" was Mary Woronov, years before she gained a cult following for her work in Rock 'n' Roll High School and Eating Raoul. The three-and-a-half hour film consisted of two series of images shown simultaneously, though only one soundtrack was audible; in 1995, Warhol associate Paul Morrissey prepared a video edition for broadcast on British television, though the film has yet to be broadcast in the United States and there is no authorized video release as yet in North America.

Veronique (Irène Jacob) is a beautiful young French woman who
aspires to be a renowned singer; Weronika (also Jacob) lives in Poland,
has a similar career goal and looks identical to Veronique, though the
two are not related. The film follows both women as they contend with
the ups and downs of their
individual lives, with Veronique embarking on an unusual romance with
Alexandre Fabbri (Philippe Volter), a puppeteer who may be able to help
her with her existential issues.

This Hou Hsiao Hsien masterpiece is a portrait of the childhood and
adolescence of octogenarian Taiwanese puppet master and actor Li
T'ien-lu, who narrates the film both off-screen and on-screen. In this
second installment of a trilogy on Taiwanese life in the 20th century
(City of Sadness is the first and Good Men, Good Women is the third),
Li's development as an artist and husband plays out between 1908 and
1945 under the heavy hand of Japanese rule, paralleling the development
of Taiwan's own political
consciousness. The movie deftly shifts from a dramatization of Li's
life, to Li speaking directly to the camera about his experiences, to
his puppet performances in a semi-documentary style that recalls The
Thin Blue Line (1988). Here, as in most of his films, Hou uses long
takes and off-screen space to create a complex, richly layered

Plucky Englishwoman Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) travels to the
remote islands of the Scottish Hebrides in order to marry a wealthy

Loner Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) works at a film studio during the
day and, at night, takes racy photographs of women. Also he's making a
documentary on fear, which involves recording the reactions of victims
as he murders them. He befriends Helen (Anna Massey), the daughter of
the family living in the
apartment below his, and he tells her vaguely about the movie he is
making. She sneaks into Mark's apartment to watch it and is horrified by
what she sees -- especially when Mark catches her.
