Italian director Luchino Visconti dishes up his usual blend of elegance
and decadence in Senso. The international cast includes French film star
Alida Valli as a Italian countess married to a Venetian nobleman, and
English leading man Farley Granger as an Austrian military officer. The
two are swept up in the Austrian empire's evacuation of Italy in 1866.
Valli and Granger fall in love, but Valli ultimately realizes that the
officer is interested only in her wealth and prestige, whereupon she
gives him over to a firing squad. Visconti had wanted Ingrid Bergman
and Marlon Brando for his leads, but when Bergman's husband Roberto
Rossellini would not permit her to appear in the film, Brando also bowed
out. Originally running 166 minutes, Senso was released in a radically
cut version in the US in 1968, titled Summer Hurricane ; yet another
recut version popped up in England as The Wanton Contessa.

nightwatchman and a series of women whom he charms and discards. He

another rambling, character-driven film with a twisted sense of humor.
Set in a seedy New Orleans summer, Down By Law details the meeting of
three unlikely convicts and their just as unlikely escape. Zack (Tom
Waits) is an out-of-work DJ who is accused of murder when a body is
found in the trunk of a stolen car he was hired to drive across town.
Jack (John Lurie) is a pimp set up for a fall by a competitor. These two
sullen souls are locked in a
cell with Roberto (Roberto Benigni), a cheerful Italian immigrant who
happens to have killed a man. The chemistry between the members of this
loosely bound "team" is fascinating: Zack and Jack are forever laughing
at Roberto, yet they rely on his energy and good will to escape their
dire situation. The three mismatched miscreants eventually bust out of
jail and head into the Louisiana bayous. Tired and hungry, they separate
to search for food: Waits goes one way, Lurie another, and the
frightened Benigni decides to risk stepping into a ramshackle diner.
Somehow or other, he winds up in the arms of gorgeous Italian girl
Nicoletta Braschi -- and is even able to provide new clothes and escape
routes for his astonished comrades!

By the Light of the Silvery Moon was a sequel to Warner Bros' On
Moonlight Bay (1951); both films were loosely based on the "Penrod"
stories by Booth Tarkington. Penrod himself (played by Billy Gray) takes
a back seat to the main plot, concerning the hot-and-cold romance
between Doris Day and Gordon MacRae. Gordon will not marry Doris until
he is financially able to do so, which results in several breakups and
reunions before the final clinch at the local ice rink. A silly subplot
involves Penrod's suspicions
that an attractive French schoolteacher (Maria Palmer) is not only
romancing his father (Leon Ames), but is also an enemy spy! Set shortly
after the end of World War I, Silvery Moon takes full advantage of that
era's popular songs. The film isn't quite as good as On Moonlight Bay,
but fans of Day and MacRae went home happy. Also: watch closely, and
you'll spot Merv Griffin in a minor role.
